Onshore Power Supply

OPS following IEC 80005-1/3

Onshore Power Supply (OPS) allows a ship docked at berth to shut down its onboard generators and draw electric power directly from shore, drastically cutting emissions, noise and fuel usage.

Under EU policy (e.g. AFIR), ports must deploy OPS infrastructure by 2030 to meet demand from passenger, container and other vessels. In practice, OPS systems require robust high-voltage or medium-voltage connections, protective switchgear, and safe interfaces adapted to ship and grid requirements.

Beyond large commercial shipping, shore power is equally critical for marinas and recreational boating. In these environments, pleasure craft rely on specialized low-voltage connections equipped with advanced safety features—such as integrated breaking capacity—to eliminate electrical arcing during manipulation and ensure secure, foolproof power distribution for users.

By enabling ships and boats to “plug in” rather than run engines in port, OPS plays a key role in decarbonizing maritime operations and improving urban air quality.
